Oregon’s forests are rich with a diverse array of hardwoods and softwoods, which have not only shaped the landscape but also the architectural heritage of our state. As climate change puts increasing pressure on our forests, it becomes more urgent than ever to diversify how we use wood products—ensuring a sustainable future for both our forests and industries.

This tour offers a rare chance to explore the use of locally sourced Oregon wood in one of the state’s most underappreciated historical architectural gems—the Oregon State Forester’s Building. Not open to the public, this is an exclusive opportunity to experience its unique design firsthand.

Designed by Linn A. Forrest and built in 1938 by the WPA and CCC, the Oregon State Forester’s Building is a masterpiece of Oregon woodwork. It showcases 18 native wood species in a variety of intricate carvings and millwork throughout its floors, walls, and ceilings. Each room offers a distinct collection of wood species, accompanied by unique millwork patterns that highlight the craftsmanship of the era.

Forrest is also renowned for his work as the U.S. Forest Service architect behind Timberline Lodge, a key example of the rustic National Park style that emphasizes the use of native and local materials.

In addition to the Oregon State Forester’s Office tour, attendees are welcome to join us for an optional lunch at Zena Forest Products, followed by a stroll through our working, sustainably managed forest and a chance to learn about innovative uses of Oregon hardwoods as we tour the mill.

Our Zena EdgeGrain™ flooring is featured in the newly redesigned Portland Airport, which, like the State Forester’s Office, showcases wood sourced from across our region, combined with a modern emphasis on sustainable sourcing.
